Multiple Sony Cameras Coming This Year Despite Massive Factory Fire

Sony isn’t letting a major components factory fire slow down its release schedule in 2021.

The company is releasing multiple new E-mount cameras this year, PetaPixel reports, and this despite the logistical difficulties posed by the AKM factory fire.

For those of you that missed our coverage of that factory fire, you can read the article here.

After the fire, Sony issued a public apology about expected delays in some products though no culprit was actually named in the letter.

It reads in part:

“In the digital imaging category (Cyber-shot, α, Handycam, Action cam), it is expected that we will not be able to supply enough models to meet market demand due to an ongoing issue with parts supply, thus it will take some time until the final product is able to be delivered.”

Further:

“In addition, after December 3, 2020, we have decided to suspend orders from our distributors and customers at the Sony store for certain models with tight supply. As far as when we expect to resume this operation, we will consider that while observing the status of parts supply and will inform you separately on the product information page.”

Despite all of this, rumors are pointing to at least three cameras arriving this year with a successor to the a7 III coming along and a new A9. The only thing is that no one can quite figure out when Sony is going to debut them. We not only have the lingering impacts of COVID-19 on live events but, also, if parts supply remains an issue the company could decide to just wait it out until it can make more product available in the market.
