Fall is here! That means the leaves are changing and with that comes the usual fall design aesthetic.

I’m usually the type of designer to buck the trends, but this year I wanted to see what I could do with my own take on the classic look of fall leaves. It’s a staple of pretty much every fall design. You start to see the orange, red, and brown leaves, and it awakens the autumn nostalgia most people have, at least in the northern hemisphere.

So what I ended up doing was creating a pack of illustrated leaves and patterns for you to use in many different ways. Below I have some examples of how you can apply them in your own ways.

Included in the Fall Foliage Vectors and Overlays Design Pack

This free Fall Foliage pack includes six unique designs. It’s offered up in two file formats — transparent Portable Network Graphics (.PNG) and an Encapsulated PostScript (.EPS) files. So it’s up to you if you want to use them as-is in Photoshop, or to open them in Illustrator and start to experiment.

In the files, you’ll have numerous leaves in an array of colors and species for you to mix and match as you please. Some are already set up to use as backgrounds, patterns, or borders. It’s really ultimately up to you how you use them.

Use them simply as backgrounds to add your designs on top of.

You can experiment with one of the ready-made backgrounds, or take the leaves that you like and create your own. Either way you have a great fall theme to start designing on top of. It’s really up to you how much you want to get in there and experiment to see where your design falls.

Use it as a simple drag and drop frame.

Two of these PNGs are all ready to go. Just drag and drop a picture in behind it, and you’re done. If you’re feeling adventurous, open up the EPS files and arrange them to your liking, and re-save as a new custom PNG. It’s that easy.

Get creative and use them as overlays.

There are a lot of cool things you can do with these shapes, including creating the effect of shadows from the foliage onto an image by using color overlays, blurs, and changing the opacity. You can also use the blur tool to create the effect that the foliage is is front of someone. Use blur and shadow to add a lot of creative fun to an image.
